Eagles Finish Fourth in OVC Rifle Championship

The 18th-ranked Morehead State rifle team turned in a fourth-place effort at the Ohio Valley Conference Championship with an aggregate score of 4,607. The Eagles fired a 2,292 in smallbore on Saturday and 2,315 in air rifle on Sunday (Feb. 8) at the Gamecock Rifle Range.

Host Jacksonville State claimed its fourth consecutive league championship after the two-day event. The Gamecocks also won crowns in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Murray State placed second with a 4,644, while UT Martin's mixed team finished third with a 4,615.

Morehead State had five individuals collect six postseason conference awards.

Senior Ethan Cole is a first-team selection in smallbore and second-team choice in air rifle, while junior Russell Smith picked up second-team honors in smallbore. Freshmen Joe Fischer and Dan Hill are members of the All-Newcomer Team in smallbore, while classmate Haley Wilson garnered the same honor in air rifle.

Cole led MSU with a 578 in smallbore, while Smith (573), Fischer (573), Hall (568) and Wilson (557) rounded out the line-up. Cole also paced the Eagles with a 584 in air rifle, while Wilson (582), Hall (578), Smith (571) and Fischer (567) closed out the scoring.

Morehead State has just two more events on its 2014-15 schedule. The Eagles are slated to shoot in the Western Intercollegiate Conference Championship on Saturday, Feb. 14, in West Lafayette, Ind., and NCAA Qualifier on Sunday, Feb. 22, in Lexington, Ky.
