Eagle Softball Scores 20 Runs in Wins Over Siena, Alabama A&M

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State softball team scored a combined 20 runs in their wins over Siena and Alabama A&M on Sunday at the Buccaneer Classic. They downed Siena, 9-1, in the morning before beating A&M, 11-3, in the afternoon.

"We put together complete efforts today. Our offense produced runs and Mackenzie (Grossmann), Allison (Rager), and Taylor (Funk) were great in the circle," said head coach David Williams.

In the 9-1 win over Siena, the Eagles pulled away with a seven-run third inning and received solid pitching performances from Mackenzie Grossmann and Allison Rager. Grossman (3-3) picked up the win after allowing one run off of six hits in four innings of work. She struck out four and walked five.

Morehead State had 10 hits, nine of which were singles. Dana Hutchins went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in. Kayla McGuffey and Lizzy Margagliotti had multi-hit games.

Against Alabama A&M, MSU jumped out with six runs in the first inning and then extended the lead with four more in the fourth inning.

Tressa Watson started off the game with a lead-off home run and finished 1-for-2. Hannah Murphy also homered and went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and four runs batted in. Hutchins was perfect at the plate as she went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Taylor Funk (2-2) pitched 4.1 scoreless innings to record the win. She allowed just one hit and walked two, while striking out four.

Hutchins was named the Buccaneer Classic MVP, while Grossmann, Margagliotti, and McGuffey were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Next weekend, the Eagles return home to host the Morehead State Tournament. They will play St. Bonaventure on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., and then Eastern Michigan on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
