Fayette County voters may have to wait longer to receive their absentee ballots due to a COVID-19 case in the county clerk's election department. The office has been temporarily shut down as employees go into quarantine.
Some preparations for the upcoming November election will be pushed back as the staff heads home for at least two weeks following a COVID-19 positive.
In a statement, Fayette County Clerk Don Blevins called it a "devastating setback" that will have a "significant impact."
While the office is working to establish back-up processes, Blevins says there could be some delays in delivering absentee ballots to those who have already requested them. He hopes the extra wait time will be minimal, possibly just a few days. But for now, all questions for the elections department will be rerouted to the Kentucky Board of Elections.
Blevins reports all necessary elections officers have been recruited for November and his office hopes to finalize in-person voting locations as early as this week.
