Students in Carter County were scheduled to return to class Thursday…but that date has been pushed back due to an increase of COVID-19 cases among school-aged children.
The announcement was made via social media yesterday, saying the recommendation was made by the Carter County Health Department. The update comes less than two weeks after the district announced they would not implement a mask mandate.
Governor Andy Beshear was made aware of the situation during his COVID-19 press conference yesterday. He responded, saying a universal masking requirement is a recommendation going all the way up to the federal level from the Centers for Disease Control.
The new start date for Carter Schools is set for August 16th, but the district says they will re-evaluate information at the end of the week.
1,052 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in the Commonwealth yesterday, with 231 of them affecting individuals age 18 and younger.
