Chinese Dance Presentation Part of Makings of a Master Visit to Mason County

Kentucky Arts Council

The Kentucky Arts Council’s traveling folk and traditional arts exhibit, Makings of a Master, will be in Mason County through Feb. 27.

The exhibit is at Mason County Public Library, 218 E. Third St. in Maysville. Library hours are Monday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.; Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The library is closed Sunday.

“Makings of a Master” consists of interpretive panels displaying photos and quotes, along with a push-button video display.

On Feb. 15, master traditional artist Shuling Fister of Lexington will present a program of Chinese traditional dance 1-2 p.m. at the library. This public performance is free.

Fister is a member of the arts council’s adjudicated Performing Artists Directory and has received an arts council Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grant to teach traditional Chinese dance to an apprentice.

“I hope the students and others will learn that China consists of many ethnic groups, each having its own distinct folk art form and tradition,” Fister said. “The performance will showcase several ethnic group dances and their traditions expressed in the dances.”

Fister said she believes her presentation, as well as other presentations associated with the Makings of a Master exhibit, help bring diverse art forms to parts of the state where they may not be readily available.

“The Kentucky Arts Council provides these opportunities so we all can understand and appreciate each other's identity and traditions, creating a harmonious living environment,” she said.
