Chilling Defense Helps Eagles Freeze Jaspers in Straight Sets

MSU Athletics

In its first match of the day, Morehead State volleyball swept Manhattan to improve to 2-0 in the Blue and Gold Tournament. The Eagles' (7-2) stifling defense allowed Morehead State to sweep the Jaspers (0-9) 25-117, 25-12, and 25-21 in straight sets.

Throughout the match, Manhattan found it hard to penetrate the smothering Eagles' defense. Morehead State chilled its opponent to a sub-zero hitting percentage, with Manhattan finishing with a -0.024 percentage. Manhattan connected on just 17 kills in the match, making 19 errors to propel the Eagles.

The Eagles' front row turned back six total shots, led by junior middle blocker Karlee Reynolds and sophomore outside hitter Olivia Lohmeier, who totaled three apiece. Freshman middle blocker Mia Swearingen would add a pair of blocks, while redshirt senior Jessie Wachtman, senior Jordan Jones, and redshirt sophomore Chandler Clark would each add one apiece.

Offensively, Morehead State slammed home 36 winners. Lohmeier connected on 14 total terminations, reaching double-digits in the category for the sixth time this season. Sophomore outside hitter Lauren Rokey added seven kills, while Wachtman (5), redshirt sophomore Liz Allen (3), Jones (2), Swearingen (2), Clark (1), redshirt freshman Taylor Hodges (1), and freshman Hannah Keating (1) all found their names in the ledger as well.

In the back row, freshman Allison Whitten paced the Eagles, scooping up 11 of the team's 37 digs. Whitten's total marks the seventh time this season she's reached double-digits in digs. Redshirt junior Danielle McCarson nearly notched double-digits, collecting nine digs.

On the serve, Morehead State used an 8-0 advantage in the service aces category to pull away from its opponent. The Eagles did not make a single receiving error in the match to blank their opponent in the ace department.
