BSCTC

The Diversity Committee at Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) will host The Get Together: A Multicultural Symposium from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Thursday, March 30 on the Prestonsburg campus of the college (Johnson Building, Room 102).

The event is free and open to the public.

“Eastern Kentucky is a melting pot of diversity,” said Bobby McCool, dean of community development at BSCTC. “This is a day to celebrate, to learn and to understand that we are all working for a better eastern Kentucky.”

John Rosenberg, a local attorney and philanthropist, will be the keynote speaker. Other presentations include: Himlerville: Immigrants and the Coal Industry by Doug Cantrell; Islam: A Misunderstood Religion by Dr. Aiyub Palmer; STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) for Women by Aida Bermudez; Latina Dancers by Exon Menjivar; Italy: A Personal Tour by Judy Howell; The Destruction of Black Wall Street by Jeff Green; and Japanese Religions by William Bowman.

The event will also feature a panel discussion.

“The Get Together is about the concept of learning, but more importantly, it is a time of discussion and collaboration,” said Greta Heintzelman Slone, associate professor of English and member of the college’s diversity committee. “By learning, we can gain a better understanding of other cultures and how we are similar in many ways.”

Janie Beverley, director of disability services, has also worked in the coordination of this event.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged for this event. To RSVP, contact Bobby McCool at (606) 886-7354 or email bobby.mccool@kctcs.edu.
