Blevins hopes 'Kentucky Wired' will continue

Rowan County Judge-Executive Walter Blevins is keeping his fingers crossed that state legislators won’t pull the plug on the “Kentucky Wired” initiative.

Kicked off in 2014, the aim of Kentucky Wired has been to run three-thousand miles of fiber optic cable across the state to improve high-speed internet access.  However, 230-million dollars later…only 708 miles of the cable is in-place….and many lawmakers are worried about its final cost.

Blevins says having quality broadband service is crucial to future economic development efforts in Rowan County and Eastern Kentucky and he hopes the legislature will keep Kentucky Wired going.

Blevins says an official from a private company working with the state on the project recently made him believe his county will eventually get the high-speed internet it needs…

Legislators need to include 100-million dollars in the state’s next budget to continue the Kentucky Wired effort.
