Big Sandy Community & Technical College Awarded Grant

Big Sandy Community & Technical College has been awarded the Strengthening Institutions Program (Title III) Grant.

The project entitled “Achieving Academic Excellence through Advisement, Apprenticeship and Academic Innovation” is for $2,250.000.00 spread equally over five years.

The project focuses on three strategic initiatives: the establishment of an academic success center and the development of a college-wide, case-managed intrusive advising program, the development of a new work-and-learn registered apprenticeship pathways that align with high-wage, high-demand occupations and the construction of sync classrooms to diversify delivery of instruction.

Dr. Sherry Zylka, President/CEO of BSCTC stated, “We are pleased to be the recipient of a U.S. Department of Education Title III grant that will strengthen our students, so they will graduate and earn a livable wage right here in our region.”

Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) provides accessible quality educational opportunities for student success, promotes economic growth and enhances the quality of life of its constituents.  With campuses in Prestonsburg, Paintsville, Hager Hill and Pikeville, BSCTC offers 30 programs and more than 200 credentials.

Paul Hitchcock earned his Masters in Communications from Morehead State University and Bachelors in Radio-TV/Psychology from Georgetown College. A veteran broadcaster for more than 40 years and an avid fan of blues, jazz and American roots music. Hitchcock has been with WMKY since 1986 and was named General Manager in 2003. He currently hosts "Muddy Bottom Blues" (Fri., 8pm-9pm), "Nothin' But The Blues" (Sat., 8pm-12am), "Sunday Night Jazz Showcase" and "Live From The Jazz Lounge" (Sun., 8pm-9pm) and "The Golden Age of Radio" (Sun., 2pm-3pm). He also serves as producer for "A Time For Tales" and "The Reader's Notebook."
