Beach Volleyball Wraps Season with a Home Sweep of Louisville

MSU Athletics

Competing for the final time during the 2019 season, Morehead State beach volleyball collected a pair of wins against an in-state foe. The Eagles (16-7) defeated Louisville in both ends of a dual match, sweeping match one before outlasting the Cardinals in match two, winning 3-2.

Over the course of the dual match, three of Morehead State's pairing came away with perfect days as the Eagles swept both matches at the first, third, and fourth pairings. Freshmen Hannah Keating and Allison Whitten, graduate student Georgia Childers and freshman Margaret Musselman, and freshman Hannah Mabrey and sophomore Lauren Rokey comprised the three lines, respectively, for the Eagles.

Competing at the second flight, sophomore Olivia Lohmeier and freshman Olivia Montelisciani combined to split on the day, taking their flight in match one before falling in match two. Junior Karlee Reynolds split both of her matches from the fifth line, combining with redshirt freshman Taylor Hodges in match one before pairing with redshirt senior Jess Hall in match two.

Prior to Saturday's dual match, Morehead State beach volleyball honored its two seniors (Childers and Hall). Childers, a graduate transfer from Northern Kentucky, wrapped her lone season as an Eagle with 12 wins while Hall, an inaugural member of Morehead State's beach program, finishes with seven career victories.

"Our seniors have been instrumental in showing strong guidance and leading by example for our young roster," said head coach Jaime Gordon. "They are servant leaders who will have a lasting impact on the culture of this team. They will be deeply missed next year! I have personally enjoyed having them as a part of this family and it will not quite be the same without them."

Saturday's dual match put a wrap on the most successful season in program history for Morehead State. The Eagles captured a program-best 16 wins this season, including seven victories at Fazoli's Breadstick Beach. Four players established the single-season mark for wins during the 2019 campaign as Keating, Lohmeier, Montelisciani, and Whiten each totaled 17 victories. Lohmeier also established the Morehead State career wins mark with 21 total.

"This has been a strong step forward for our program as we made some important strides forward and had some individual and team growth throughout the year," remarked Gordon. "We witnessed a lot of freshman production and development this season along with returners like Olivia Lohmeier that established themselves as forces out on the court.

"We fought hard and pulled out a lot of close matches this year. I am proud of the way the team has committed to working hard and getting better each day."

On the year, the Eagles captured 71 flight victories, resetting the program record for team flight victories.
