Beach Volleyball Transitioning to Ohio Valley Conference As League Adds Sport for 2020

MSU Athletics

As Morehead State beach volleyball prepares for its fourth season of competition, a new and familiar conference affiliation is on the horizon.

"This is a big day for Morehead State and the Ohio Valley Conference," said interim director of athletics and head coach Jaime Gordon. "Establishing beach volleyball as an OVC Championship sport will have a positive impact on our student-athletes."

With five conference institutions sponsoring beach volleyball, the Ohio Valley Conference has announced the addition of beach volleyball as the conference's 19th-sponsored sport, adding the sport for the 2019-20 season.

The addition of beach volleyball makes the OVC one of five core Division I conferences to sponsor beach volleyball as a championship sport, joining the Atlantic Sun, Big West, Pac-12, and West Coast Conferences.

Morehead State, Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, and UT Martin will be joined by the University of Tennessee Chattanooga-which has accepted an invitation to become an associate member-as the conference's beach volleyball roster.

The OVC's inaugural beach volleyball season is set for the spring of 2020 with each of the six members competing for a conference championship. A six-team conference tournament will be played with date and site to be determined at a later date.

"The relationships and rivalries that we benefit from as members of the OVC will now be enjoyed by our beach volleyball players as well. I am excited to be a part of this new journey and look forward to building this with the conference with the student-athletes at the heart of each decision," added Gordon.

Morehead State will transition from the ASUN after just one season. The Eagles' lone season in the ASUN saw the team finish 16-7-including a 7-1 record at Fazoli's Breadstick Beach-and 4-4 in the ASUN.
