Baseball's Chase Sorter Claims OVC and National Player of the Week Honors

MSU Athletics

Making his Morehead State debut in Saturday's doubleheader at Furman, redshirt junior Chase Sorter introduced himself to Eagle fans and Ohio Valley Conference in a big way, claiming OVC Player of the Week and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Player of the Week honors.

Sorter, a Temple, Texas native, comes to Morehead State from McLennan Community College in Texas. During his freshman season in 2017, he helped McLennan to a 52-13 record and an appearance in the NJCAA World Series.

During the Eagles' weekend series at Furman, Sorter finished 5-for-7 with a pair of doubles and three home runs, driving in six runs on the weekend. He also added two walks as he produced a .714 batting average, .778 on-base percentage, and a 2.286 slugging percentage. He opened the doubleheader going 1-for-3 with a pair of walks and an eighth inning two-run homer. He'd then turn around in the nightcap and go 4-for-4 with two doubles and two home runs, producing four RBI for the Eagles.

In addition to being named OVC Player of the Week and a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week, Sorter is a nominee for USA Baseball's Golden Spikes Award Performance of the Week. Fans can help Sorter claim this national honor by heading to @USAGoldenSpikes on Twitter and vote for Sorter in the organization's weekly poll.

Sorter and the Eagles return home for a four-game set this weekend at Allen Field, hosting Oakland for a non-conference series. The series kicks of Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET with games also set for Friday (3 p.m.), Saturday (2 p.m.), and Sunday (1 p.m.).
