American Lung Association’s Derby Eve Gala cancelled

CNN

The American Lung Association in Kentucky has officially cancelled the 26th annual Derby Eve Gala due to COVID-19 concerns.

“After careful consideration, the American Lung Association has made the decision to cancel the Derby Eve Gala on September 4th. COVID-19 is a lung infection and as a lung health organization, we must act in the best interests of our constituents, our supporters and the public at large. COVID-19 has claimed the lives of more than 130,000 Americans and holding a gala in the midst of rising infection rates would place attendees at risk,” said Deena Adams, executive director for the Lung Association.

Each year, the Derby Eve Gala is the hottest ticket in Louisville. The event typically includes elegant decor, a gourmet dinner, and live music and dancing. It was initially scheduled for May 4, and then postponed until September 4 to align with the changes to the Kentucky Derby. However, with the recent rise in COVID-19 cases across the country, organizers chose to cancel this year’s event.

While the Derby Eve Gala is cancelled, the Lung Association will host a virtual LUNG FORCE Walk from July 17 – 26 (information and registration is available here) as well as a drive-in style version of their Breath of Fresh Air gala on October 31 to promote social distancing.

“The challenges we currently face with the lung disease, COVID-19, truly emphasize the value your participation and donations. Our new COVID-19 Action Initiative is a $25 million investment that strives to defeat this virus and defend against future respiratory pandemics,” said Adams.
