8th Inning HR Lifts Baseball Past Mississippi Valley State

MSU Athletics

A two-out home run in the top of the eighth inning by junior right fielder Brandon Rawe pushed the Morehead State baseball team past Mississippi Valley State, 3-2, on Wednesday (Feb. 19) afternoon at the Belipanni Baseball Complex.

Morehead State picks up its second straight win to improve to 2-3 on the season, while Mississippi Valley State falls to 0-4. Senior left-hander Noah Smallwood came out of the bullpen to record his first win of the season. Sophomore righty Craig Pearcy secured the save, putting away the final four Delta Devil batters.

Rawe and junior designated hitter Chris Robinson each went 3-for-4 to lead the Eagle offense.

The Delta Devils took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on an infield single, but MSU responded with two in the top of the second using three hits in the frame. Rawe had a leadoff double. MVSU tied the game in the bottom of the fourth via an RBI single.

Smallwood and Pearcy allowed just one hit over the final four innings. Junior starting pitcher Blake Smith allowed two runs, one earned, with five strikeouts and two walks in 5.1 innings.

The Eagles return to action Friday (Feb. 21) at Grambling State for the first of a three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
