Winter weather is upon the region, but officials with the National Weather Service said not to pull out the snow shovels just yet. Following the recent bouts of snow that passed through, eastern Kentucky is slated for warmer temperatures and rainy conditions.
Jonathan Marcus, meteorologist with the NWS in Jackson, said the weather through the weekend will be a change of pace.
“It’ll remain cold for the next couple of days, especially in the morning, but we’re actually headed into a warming trend into the weekend. So, we’ll be looking at approaching upper 40s and maybe 50s, and Saturday a little bit warmer, and then we’re going to kind of plateau around 55 degrees for a little bit. So, it’s definitely going to get warmer,” said Marcus.
He said the forecast calls for rain throughout the weekend, into early next week, and temperatures will remain in the 40s-to-50s range.
Despite this, Marcus said it’s always important to be aware of the chance for slick road conditions this time of year.
“Last week was Kentucky Winter Weather Awareness Week, so the various National Weather Service offices in Kentucky all worked together to put out infographics on what you can do to winterize your vehicles and your homes, just so that they can better prepare themselves for this winter. So, anyone interested in ‘What can I do to protect myself this winter?’ is encouraged to go look at those graphics, as well as our national winter safety weather campaign,” said Marcus.
Infographics can be found on the National Weather Service Jackson social media pages and additional information is available on weather.gov.
