Education officials tout state scholarship allowing students to earn an associate degree debt-free

Maysville Community and Technical College

Officials with Maysville Community and Technical College are reminding current and prospective students that the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship allows them to attend school and graduate debt-free.

The program is open to any student who lives in Kentucky, has a high school diploma or GED, or is enrolled in a GED program, and has not earned an associate degree or higher.

Natalee Brown, Director of Recruitment with MCTC, said the program gives students the opportunity to go to college without the worry of future financial burdens.

“I think if a student is on the fence about going to college or taking on the burden of student loan debt, it’s a really incredible opportunity that the state of Kentucky affords the students. And if they have questions about that scholarship or want to get started, MCTC is a great starting point and ending point for many students,” said Brown.

Brown said if any students have questions about the grant, she and her team would be happy to speak with them about the different opportunities available.

“It is a last-dollar-in scholarship, meaning that it will help students after their aid has already been applied. So, if we see a student, for example, that is coming to us. They’ve been awarded a Pell Grant and maybe another grant from KHEAA, such as the CAP grant, but they still have need in terms of their bill, that is when they can apply for the Work Ready scholarship if they are in an eligible program,” said Brown.

Brown said the Work Ready grant will then pick up the remaining tuition and up to $400 in fees per year.

To apply, Brown said people must attend a KCTCS school, fill out the FAFSA, and then fill out the application for the Work Ready grant. More information can be found at workreadykentucky.com.
