New Fleming County senior center still under construction

Fleming County Judge Executive John Sims Jr.

Construction on Fleming County’s new senior center is currently underway, but some setbacks have caused a delay in the center’s opening.

The $3.2 million project was set to begin operations in January, but Fleming County Judge Executive John Sims Jr. said delays in December have pushed back the opening date.

“The backlogs of equipment and supplies, the COVID hangover, you would say, has kind of pushed it back a little bit, and some weather issues also,” he said.

Sims said the new senior center was needed in the county, and they are grateful to have the land to build it on, despite the setbacks.

“The current senior center was built in the ‘70s, so it’s kind of outdated,” he said. “So, they’ve, the city and the county bought some property out on the bypass, and they also, those folks that own the property donated a lot for us, to give to us.”

The judge executive added the county now has a new opening date in mind.

“Hopefully, we’re shooting to be fully operational by May 1,” he said.

Sims said around $2 million of the project was funded for through a grant from the Department of Local Government, and the rest was paid for with money the county received from the American Rescue Plan.
