Rowan County Public Library is in the middle of its annual celebration of Library Card Signup Month, with lots of prizes to win. Library Card Signup Month is a nationwide event held every year in September to celebrate the beginning of the school year and encourage kids to get reading.
Jasmyne Lewis, Director of the Rowan County Public Library, said there are many benefits of having a library card.
“Access to all of our library collection. It gives you check out privileges for books, movies, CD’s, games, audio books. It also gives you access to all of our online resources as well, such as Hoopla, Libby, and other online databases and tutoring resources that we have available through the libraries website,” said Lewis.
Officials said children, especially, can get a lot out of a library card and library services. The Rowan County Public Library offers many programs and services for children free of charge, including story times for all ages, LEGO club, gaming club, and various of seasonal activities.
Lewis noted its now more common for children to prefer digital books to traditional analog ones. To accommodate this, Lewis said the library has all sorts of options, traditional and new age, for patrons to enjoy.
Lewis said the library isn’t just a book warehouse, and that there are all sorts of services and programs available for all ages and interests. “We have computers available, we have printing options available, we have notaries, and we’re also just a good source of information, to find out where you need to go to find the information that you do need. Information seeking is our profession, and we’re really good at it,” said Lewis.
People can participate in Library Card Signup Month by signing up for a library card or by updating or verifying information within library records. Everyone who participates will be entered in a drawing for “library swag”, gift cards, and family passes to the Cave Run Storytelling Festival.
