Trailer Load Sparks Grassfire on U.S. 68

Terry Prather, The Ledger Independent

A load of straw being transported to Paris on U.S. 68 caught fire on Saturday afternoon, in the area of Nepton Road, near May's Lick.

Volunteer fire departments from four jurisdictions battled the blaze, which also set the nearby hillside on fire and threatened a house.

After realizing his load was on fire, the truck operator was able to disconnect the trailer from his truck after stopping on the west side of the road.

Windy conditions helped the fire spread quickly, blackening almost a quarter of a mile of the roadside and hillside, just yards from a home.

May's Lick Fire Department responded, along with mutual aid from Lewisburg, Maysville/Washington, and Ewing firefighters to help fight the blaze.

With fire apparatus in the roadway and firefighters spreading out and drenching the straw with water, both lanes of traffic were closed for a time, and vehicles were detoured to side roads.

A cause for the straw fire had not confirmed by press time. No injuries were reported.
