A Lewis County home was destroyed in a fire on Wed., Nov. 26.
Garrison Volunteer Fire Department Chief Marty Strong said he received a call to respond to a home on Charles Street in the Bentleyville area, east of Garrison, at about 2:30 p.m.
According to Strong, the doublewide mobile home, owned by Susan Madden, seemed to be engulfed in flames, but due to the heavy amount of smoke it was difficult to know for sure.
Madden was home when the fire began, but was able to escape without injuries, Strong said.
"The smoke was floor level," Strong said. "We put 13,000 gallons of water on it and eventually it got to the point where the water was doing as much damage as the fire. We knew there was no hope of saving it.'
"The owner said she'd had some problems with her electric heater, so the cause was pretty obvious," Strong added.
Strong said the heater sat in an area center to the trailer in a "closet looking" area near the living room. The fire started at the heater and extended into the attic of the home.
According to Strong, firefighters were able to save some medications and mementos the homeowner had, but everything else was destroyed.
Officials with the Red Cross were also called to the scene in order to assist Madden.
Strong said he left the scene about 5:15 p.m., but was called back around 11:30 p.m. for an hour after the fire rekindling.
"We were able to get it out for good then," he said.
Garrison VFD was assisted at the scene by the Firebrick VFD, Black Oak VFD and the Lewis County Sheriff's Office.
