Email threat in Rowan County not credible

Police say that an email threat sent to local media and elected officials early this (Wednesday) morning is not credible.

The communication appears to come from outside the United States and threatened active shooter activity and bombings against certain buildings in the county.

Rowan Sheriff Matt Sparks says the issue has been ongoing for nearly two years and can be traced to the online activity of teenagers.

Law enforcement is continuing an investigation but says that the email and calls to 911 are examples of SWATTING, which is currently classified as terroristic threatening.
