Governor Andy Beshear has confirmed that two cases of the United Kingdom COVID-19 variant have been confirmed in the Commonwealth. Beshear said there would be more information from State Public Health Commissioner Dr. Steven Stack during his daily press briefing on Wednesday. Health officials across the globe have confirmed that the new strain is a more aggressive variant of the virus.

Beshear did have some good news to report. More vaccines are coming to the Commonwealth. President Biden’s COVID-19 team held a call with state Governors on Tuesday and vowed to boost the vaccine supply to each state by 16%. States will also be told the minimum supply they could expect for the next three weeks.

“This is going to help us plan which is going to help our providers out there be able to plan," Beshear said "It’s going to help us be able to sign more people up for their appointments knowing that we will have a certain amount in the future.”

The Governor said his team has worked out the early kinks of getting doses into the arms of Kentuckians but the roadblock in recent weeks has been a lack of supply. The state ranks in the top ten across the nation for efficient distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine.
