A scheduled meeting of the new state board of education installed by Gov. Andy Beshear will likely go ahead as planned Thursday morning following a judge’s ruling.
Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate issued a late decision denying former board members a temporary injunction blocking the new board from gathering.
The reconstituted board is slated to discuss the possible removal of Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis, a charter schools supporter backed by former Republican governor Matt Bevin. It’s also set to weigh the appointment of an interim director and the launch of a search for a permanent replacement.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports Lewis has said he would not resign immediately, instead insisting on a 90 day notice if he is terminated without cause – per his contract.
Beshear appointed a new state board of education as his first act as governor.
