Bevin Has Prayerful Suggestion For Louisville's Violence Problem

Associated Press

Gov. Matt Bevin is suggesting Louisville residents commit to regular neighborhood walks and prayer to help address the city’s growing violence problem.

The governor put forward the recommendation at a packed meeting with pastors and religious leaders at Western Middle School Thursday – reportedly telling the audience that “God cannot be mocked” and it’s “up to us” to address the issue.

Talking with reporters, Bevin said there's "nothing sacred or magic or perfect about any idea that I'll have or any one person, but the bottom line is this: We need something because nothing that we've tried thus far seems to be helping."

While media reports say the crowd applauded Bevin’s comments on the power of prayer, his speech also drew some hecklers. Critics suggest the governor's approach ignores other avenues that may require legislation or more money.

Prior to the meeting, Pastor Vincent James told WDRBthat Bevin's tack is "degrading us as faith leaders as thought we haven't been doing our work."

But others, like Pastor Jerry Stephenson, hear a call to arms for religious groups.

"We haven't done our job and I think what this governor is saying to is it's time for you to do your job," he told the Louisville channel.
