Lexingtonians Join Worldwide Climate Demonstration
Lexington was not left out of this weekend’s coordinated international climate rally.
Around 50 to 70 Lexington demonstrators joined the more than 600,000 marchers who are estimated to have turned out for the People’s Climate March worldwide.
Organizer Lisa Conley led the protesters from Triangle Park to the courthouse plaza, where the crowd brainstormed local ideas to save energy and promote sustainability.
While the large numbers in New York are bound to catch the attention of some national policymakers, Conley says she hopes the Lexington rally encourages action on a local level.
"I hope that local leaders see that this is something that needs to be addressed," she says. "I've heard the political campaign speeches of all of our representatives on both sides of the aisle and none of them are talking about this issue."
Conley says a focus on creating jobs in renewable energy could help ease concerns about the economic effects of climate change policy in the Commonwealth.
