Women's Basketball Suffers Setback at No. 25 Kentucky

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State women's basketball concluded their November slate with an 87-57 loss on Wednesday afternoon to the No. 25-ranked Kentucky Wildcats at Memorial Coliseum.

With the defeat, the Eagles regress to 6-2 on the year while the Wildcats improve to 8-0.

"I expected there to be some jitters coming out between the crowd, the atmosphere, and playing in a venue like this," said Morehead State head coach Greg Todd. "Credit to Kentucky for how well they came out with pressuring the ball and forcing us into turnovers. They built a large lead in the second quarter and we weren't able to overcome how well they shot the ball."

Shooting efficiency proved to be the achilles heel in the performance early on, as Kentucky made the most of a 13-2 run from the 7:13 mark to the 2:33 mark in the opening stanza. From there, the Wildcat lead stretched to 52-23 by halftime. The first half concluded with the hosts hitting 20-of-33 (.606) shots from the field, compared to the Eagles 8-of-28 (.286) clip in the half.

The Eagles trailed 74-35 at the end of the third quarter before putting together a solid fourth where they outscored Kentucky 22-13.

The Eagles were paced by junior guard Aliyah Jeune, who led all Eagles with 15 points. Senior guard Miranda Crockett followed suit with 13 points, continuing her streak of double-digit performances to eight.

Senior forward Tierra McGowan saw her first prominent action since suffering an ankle injury at Gardner-Webb on Nov. 11 to lead the Eagles in rebounding with 10.

Senior guard Maci Morris set the tone for the Wildcats by pouring in a season-high 25 points in the first half, hitting 10-of-14 from the field, and notching 4-of-6 from behind the arc. The Pineville, Ky. native finished with 31.

Morehead State returns home to Johnson Arena Sunday afternoon when the Eagles take on Evansville. Tip-off is slated for 2:05 p.m. ET.
