Women's Basketball fall short in shootout with Terriers

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State women's basketball team found itself on the short side of a shootout with St. Francis Brooklyn on Sunday evening as the Eagles first loss of the season came in a 101-94 loss to the Terriers in the Vinewood Farm Classic at Johnson Arena.

Morehead State led 46-39 entering the locker room at the half before St. Francis Brooklyn exploded for 62 points in the second half on 20-of-27 (.741) shooting.

"You have to give them (St. Francis Brooklyn) a lot of credit for knocking down shots," said head coach Greg Todd. "Defensively though we can't allow teams to get comfortable and start knocking down shots."

Despite a solid night offensively, Morehead State allowed STFB to sink 34-of-61 (.557) shots. The 55.7 percent shooting performance was the most for an opponent since Kentucky hit 56.4 percent of its shots against the Eagles on Nov. 17, 2017.

The Terriers were paced by guard Jade Johnson who scored 27 points and hit 6-of-7 (.857) from beyond the arc.

The duo of senior guard Mirada Crockett and Darianne Seward led the way on offense for Morehead State as Crockett netted 21 and Seward pieced together 20 points.

Crockett and Seward led an offense that shot 37-of-78 (.474) from the field.

"I thought offensively we gave ourselves a chance to win the but we just could not get stops," said Todd.

The Eagles outrebounded St. Francis Brooklyn 42-31, including 19 offensive rebounds. Graduate forward Mckenzie Calvert pulled down eight rebounds while also scoring 17 points and making four assists.

Morehead State's record now stands at 4-1 overall with the loss.

The Terriers win improves their standing to 4-1 overall.

The Eagles will have a day of rest after playing in three-consecutive days before they welcome Alice Lloyd (Ky.) to Johnson Arena on Tuesday for the final game of the Vinewood Farm Classic. The battle of Eagles will have a special tip time of 11:05 a.m. ET and will serve as the Education Day game as hundreds of area K-12 students will pack Johnson Arena.

The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and broadcast on 96.3 WIVY.
