Morehead State University’s Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will host a chili competition, an all you can eat dinner and a concert Tuesday, March 6, at First Baptist Church, 123 East Main Street, Morehead.

Contestants will receive a free ticket for the dinner and the winner will receive a $50 gift certificate. The dinner will feature chili of all sorts. Tortilla chips, crackers, iced tea, lemonade and desserts will be provided.

Contact Eliza Eaches, choir president, at 740-981-7376 to compete or to reserve your tickets. Ticket prices are $10 for adults, $8 for students and children 6 and under are free.

The proceeds will go to support the choirs’ concert trip to Spain in May. In Spain, they will sing in Madrid, Granada, Valencia, Barcelona and at the Ubeda International Festival of Music and Dance.

The annual Morehead State University Winter Choral Showcase Concert will follow. Jazz Vocal Ensemble, University Chorus and Black Gospel Ensemble will join Concert Choir and Chamber Singers for the concert.

Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will feature songs and poems from Kentucky.  “Bright Morning Star,” a tune from Harlan County, will open the concert. Both groups will sing pieces from the poetry of Wendell Berry, a native of Henry County. The settings of his poetry are from a collection of choral pieces entitled “In Song and Shade” by Andrew Maxfield.

Chamber Singers also will feature pieces in Spanish. Included will be “’Suite’ de Lorca” by Einojuhani Rautavaara and “Esto Les Digo” by Kinley Lange.

University Chorus will sing Daniel Gawthrop’s “Sing a Mighty Song” and Jazz Vocal Ensemble will sing “Lil’ Darlin'" arranged by David Nokes and “Splanky” arranged Margareta Jalkeus.

The evening will conclude with Black Gospel Ensemble singing  “Sold Out” by Hezekiah Walker, “We’re Gonna Make It” by Timothy Wright, “I Shall Wear a Crown” arranged by Trey McLaughlin and “Dancing in the Spirit”  by Ronald Winans.

The concert is free and open to the public.
