Wilson's 89th minute PK goal propels soccer to 1-0 win over SIUE

MSU Athletics

Senior forward Dani Wilson netted a penalty kick with three seconds remaining in the game to propel the Morehead State soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Ohio Valley Conference foe SIUE on Sunday afternoon at Jayne Stadium.

Wilson, who now has made five game-winning goals in her career, was fouled by an SIUE defender as she tried to take a shot. The Elizabethtown, Ky., native's penalty kick shot found the back-left corner of the goal for her third goal of 2018. Wilson has now converted 5-of-6 penalty kick attempts in her career.

"I couldn't be any prouder of our team," said head coach Warren Lipka following the emotional win. "Our girls have fought all year long but haven't been rewarded so they were really deserving of this win today."

Redshirt-sophomore Eva Helgadottir picked up her first shutout win as an Eagle. Helgadottir made eight saves to preserve the clean sheet and elevated her save total to for the 2018 season.

The Eagles took 13 total shots in the match with senior's Cara Maher and Makenna Lavatori leading the charge with four apiece. Wilson added two shots in match while freshmen Evan Kays, Nicole Palmer, and Colleen Swift each took one shot.

Morehead State is now 2-8-0 overall and 1-1-0 in OVC play while the Cougars drop to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in conference.

Next up the Eagles will travel to Nashville to take on Belmont in the first of a three-game road swing. Morehead State and the Bruins are slated for action at 7:30 p.m. ET at E.S. Rose Park.
