Traffic Light Upgrade Planned on US 60 and KY 519 in Morehead

Kentucky Department of Transportation

Highway crews plan to upgrade the US 60 and KY 519 traffic signal at Morehead next week, Tuesday, Sept. 27, to provide new flashing yellow arrow indicators.

On Tuesday morning, motorists should watch for brief lane closures and delays during new signal installation.

The work is part of an ongoing Kentucky Department of Highways District 9 safety enhancement project that involves replacing yield-on-green signals with flashing yellow arrow signals at more than 20 locations along state highways in Mason, Greenup, Boyd, Carter and Rowan counties – most recently at Morehead’s I-64 interchange, along US 23 in Greenup and at Maysville.

The new arrow signals can reduce the risk of making left turns across lanes of oncoming traffic by providing more detailed information to drivers. They will not change existing traffic patterns.

Now being used at intersections across the country, this new left-turn arrow configuration stemmed from a Federal Highway Administration study about five years ago that showed the arrows had a higher level of driver comprehension and helped reduce crash rates.

Motorists are reminded that road work schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions. Please heed all warning signs, slow-down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
