Soccer picks up second OVC win in three matches at EIU

MSU Athletics

Morehead State soccer grabbed its second Ohio Valley Conference win in three matches with a 3-1 victory over Eastern Illinois on Sunday at Lakeside Field. The Eagles' record moves to 3-8-1 (2-3-1 OVC), while Eastern Illinois falls to 5-8-1 (0-5 OVC) on the season.

After falling into a 1-0 hole when Panthers sophomore Henar Urteaga knocked in a goal off a long-distance throw-in at the 25-minute mark, MSU redshirt junior Marisa Lavatori capitalized on an EIU turnover and blasted a shot high over the head of goalkeeper Sara Teteak to equalize the contest before halftime. Lavatori's goal, scored in the 38th minute, was her second of the season.

It was in the second half that the Eagles broke the competition open. In the 65th minute, junior Dani Wilson caused Teteak to fumble possession of the ball, leading to a steal. The 5-foot-4 Elizabethtown, Ky. native gained control and scored the ninth goal of her career, and first since 2015.

Following Wilson's game-winner, Lavatori found Cara Maher for an exclamation point in the 79th minute. Maher's shot hit the post and traveled to the back of the net for her team-leading third goal on the year.

With 13 attempts to Eastern Illinois' 11, Morehead State led in shots for first time all season. Wilson anchored the MSU attack with three tries at the goal, while Lavatori, Maher, and freshman Caitlyn Burdine recorded two. Tayler Stivers, Samantha Damante, Lauryn Kunz, and Ashley Ritchie added one shot apiece.

Morehead State will take a break from league play to finish off the last of its non-conference schedule at the end of the week. The Eagles travel to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats of the American Athletic Conference on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
