Road Crews Cleanup Following Severe Storms

WLEX

State highway crews in northeast Kentucky are continuing cleanup efforts, amid another round of thunderstorms, after severe storms downed trees and power lines across the region Tuesday night (June 10).

Crews responded just after the evening storms hit, some working after midnight to clear roadways. As of 4 p.m. today, most debris blocking roads or travel lanes had been removed in Kentucky Department of Highways District 9’s counties of Bath, Carter, Elliott, Fleming, Lewis, Mason, Nicholas and Rowan counties.

In Boyd County, KY 752 remained closed at mile marker 3 near Durbin because of trees in power lines. Whites Creek (KY 757) was one lane at mile marker 5 near Lockwood Estates, and in other areas between US 23 and KY 1937.

In Greenup County, crews have opened all previously closed roads but in many places – especially near KY 1 at Greenup and along KY 1458 between Flatwoods and KY 5 – debris remains piled close to travel lanes. Motorists should continue to travel with caution throughout the night and tomorrow.

Also, most power outages that darkened traffic signals along the US 23 corridor near Ashland and Russell in Boyd and Greenup counties had been eliminated and signal operations restored by late afternoon. However, outages could still be affecting signals in the Riverhill Drive and Diedrich Boulevard, or other downtown Ashland areas.

Motorists should always drive slowly when approaching non-functioning signals. When possible, stop signs are often placed at those intersections, but in the absence of signs it’s suggested that motorists treat the intersection as a four-way stop and use caution and courtesy.

Cleanup of debris along state highway roadsides will likely continue throughout the week. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
