MSU Women's Golf Finishes Second at Chris Banister Classic

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State women's golf team fired a 305 on Tuesday (Sept. 30) at the Silver Lakes Golf Course to finish second in the 11-team Chris Banister Classic. The Eagles were second after the opening round and held their spot throughout the 54-hole affair.

"The goal is to win every tournament, but that's not very realistic in our sport," Head Coach Stephanie Barker said. "I was pleased with the way we handled all three rounds on a very challenging course. We played solid, everyone contributed and we were in contention to win."

Four MSU individuals placed in the top 10 out of 67 golfers. Freshman Jeanette Petersen finished third with a 220, while senior Hannah Sublett earned a share of seventh with a 227, junior Katie Rice was ninth with a 229 and sophomore Anna Magnusson tied for 10th with a 230.

"Our young ladies worked very hard this summer, and that seems to be paying off," Barker said. "Jeanette does a lot of things well for a freshman. Hannah has really improved her game. Katie and Anna are both accomplished at this level and continue to play well for us."

Senior Vanessa Bognot registered a 237, while freshman Sarah Debnekoff posted a 252. Sublett was playing as an individual, while the other five were part of MSU's line-up. Petersen led the Eagles in round three with a 73, while Rice contributed a 74 and Magnusson a 75.

Sun Belt Conference member Troy, which led after every round, won the event with a 54-hole score of 900. Morehead State was four shots better than Samford. The Eagles also placed ahead of Ohio Valley Conference members Jacksonville State, Austin Peay and Belmont.

Fatima Fernandez Cano, a sophomore from Troy, claimed medalist honors with a three-round 217. Her teammate, senior Langley Vannoy, finished second with a 218. The course played at a par of 72 and yardage of 5,943. No one finished below par for the tournament.

Morehead State has now finished ahead of 21 opponents and behind just five during the fall season. The Eagles placed second out of 13 teams in their last event at William & Mary. MSU returns to action on Monday at the Cincinnati Bearcat Classic in Maineville, Ohio.

"We have two more fall tournaments, and I'm looking forward to seeing how we do," Barker added. "These last two tournaments will have some very solid opponents, but we will focus on what we do. We've had a lot of strong performances this fall, and I hope that continues."
