Morehead State Women's Hoops Absorbs Tough 69-68 Setback at Jacksonville State

MSU Athletics

Morehead State women's basketball lost a 69-68 heartbreaker at Jacksonville State Saturday. JSU's Lacey Buchanon hit a 15-foot corner jumper as the final buzzer went off.

The Eagles fell to 16-6 overall and 6-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference, while JSU moved to 10-11 overall and 3-6 in the league.

Morehead State took a 68-67 lead with 1:23 left on an Eriel McKee jumper but the Eagles did not score again. JSU's Briana Benson missed a three-pointer with three ticks remaining, and the rebound went out of bounds off an MSU player, giving the hosts one final shot.

"It was a tough break for us," said head coach Greg Todd. "I thought we did some good things today, but we just didn't box out well enough in the end and gave them a chance. Give JSU credit. They made the shot. I think we could have guarded their posts better throughout the game. We didn't double-team enough, and they scored down low a little too much."

Senior guard Brianna McQueen led the Eagles with her second straight 20-point game. Along with her 20 markers, she also dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds. Senior forward Shay Steele added 12 points, while sophomore guard Miranda Crockett and McKee notched 11 each.

Buchanon led the Gamecocks with 20 points. JSU barely out-rebounded MSU 42-41. Raven Pearson scored a season-best 17 for her team.

The Eagles fell behind 10-2 in the first two minutes of the opening quarter before outscoring the hosts 13-4 to lead 15-14 after one. MSU took its largest lead of the first half (20-14) following a Crockett jumper at the 8:41 mark of the second quarter.

The Eagles led until one second remained in the quarter when Briana Benson hit three free throws to give her team a 32-30 halftime cushion.

After going behind 36-30 early in the third quarter, the Eagles never led or trailed by more than three in that quarter but did push out to a 60-52 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

Morehead State returns home to host Murray State on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. ET.
