Morehead to host Kentucky Creative Industry Summit

Kentucky Arts Council

The Kentucky Arts Council will host the fourth annual Creative Industry Summit, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Dec. 5 at the Morehead Conference Center, 111 E. First St. in Morehead.

Since the inaugural Summit in 2014, the gathering has become the largest training opportunity for artists, arts advocates and business and civic leaders in the state.

“The Summit is the place for Kentucky artists, arts advocates and educators to get the latest information to help them be more competitive and effective in their own private studios, communities and classrooms,” said Chris Cathers, interim executive director of the Kentucky Arts Council. “We invite all Kentuckians who feel a kinship to the arts to join us Dec. 5 in Morehead.”

This year’s Summit agenda includes a presentation about the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Department of Defense Creative Forces project, a healing arts initiative for combat veterans being treated for traumatic brain injury or post-traumatic stress across the country.

The initiative expanded this year to include Fort Campbell Army Base. Marete Wester, senior director of arts policy for Americans for the Arts, will share information with Summit attendees on this important project, which includes the Kentucky Arts Council and Tennessee Arts Commission as partners.

“You can expect to learn about the progress toward building stronger relationships between the arts and the military and veteran populations, with an emphasis on the Creative Forces healing arts network,” Wester said. “In light of the fact that Fort Campbell is the newest site that has become part of the Creative Forces clinical network, we’ll talk about how this partnership transcends state lines (Kentucky and Tennessee).”

Attendees will also learn how they as individuals or the organizations they represent can get involved in this initiative.

“The wonderful thing about Creative Forces is that it’s starting a lot of conversations, allowing us to open up a dialogue and network with folks in a variety of ways,” Wester said.

Attendees can also learn about the progress of the arts council’s Homegrown/Handmade project in Ohio and Owsley counties. Representatives of those counties will discuss how bringing local artists into their farmers markets has improved the farmers market experience.

In addition to those topics, the Summit will feature four learning tracks: visual arts, performing arts, community development through the arts, and arts education. Topics will include using social media, legal issues for artists, pricing, generating new accounts, creating podcasts, working with retailers, and creative youth workforce development.

Registration is $15, includes a boxed lunch, and can be completed online. For more information about the Creative Industry Summit, contact Emily B. Moses, arts council executive staff advisor, at emilyb.moses@ky.gov or 502-892-3109.

The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, fosters environments for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts. Kentucky Arts Council funding is provided by the Kentucky General Assembly and the National Endowment for the Arts.
