McConnell Upset Over Lake Cumberland Water Level

Conservation Fisheries, Inc.

U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell is calling it an “absurd” choice. The Kentucky Republican is talking about a decision by the Army Corps of Engineers not to allow the water level in Lake Cumberland to return to normal this summer.

McConnell says the action was taken in order to protect a two and a half inch fish on the endangered species list called “the duskytail darter.”

“Last week, the Obama administration sided with this minnow over the economic well-being of thousands of people in southeastern Kentucky who live near or depend on Lake Cumberland as a major driver of commerce, tourism and recreation.” –Sen. Mitch McConnell

McConnell says the tourist business at Lake Cumberland has been hindered since 2007, when the Corps of Engineers lowered the water level because of problems at Wolfe Creek Dam.

He says the six counties in southeastern Kentucky that depend on the lake for economic well-being had hoped the lake would be returned to its normal level this year.
