A look back: 'A Day in the Country’

Morehead State University’s Kentucky Folk Art Center “A Day in the Country 2014” was held Saturday, June 7, at the Morehead Conference Center.

“A Day in the Country” brought more than 50 self-taught artists from more than 10 states together to display and offer their work for sale. Visitors to the show experienced wood carvings, stone carvings, paintings, and more.

This year, KFAC’s featured exhibition is “Chester Cornett: Beyond the Narrow Sky.” It presents more than two dozen rocking chairs and other objects made by him before his death in 1981, as well as numerous photographs of the artist and descriptive text panels. The exhibition presents Cornett’s amazing chairs and poses the question of why the artist chose to relentlessly pursue his outdated craft in the face of great economic and personal adversity.

The display is accompanied by a full color catalog and will feature Appalshop’s documentary film “Hand Carved.” The project was made possible through a significant grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and will remain on display through August 22.

MSU chief photographer Tim Holbrook shares some of the scenes from the events and has put them in a photo gallery

Kentucky Folk Art Center is a cultural, educational and economic development service of Morehead State University. The center is open Monday-Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
