Mountain Stage with Larry Groce will end its 2017 season and celebrate its 34th anniversary Sunday December 3 at the Culture Center Theater. Our special guests will be The Mountain Goats, Joe Henry, Nellie McKay and John K. Samson. "We're looking forward to capping off another year just as we have in previous years- with a mix of old friends, new friends and great talent, particularly song writing talent," said the show's host, co-founder and artistic director Larry Groce. "Every season, and every show, is cause for celebration."

The Mountain Goats, led by songwriter and singer John Darnielle, released "Goths" last May. Their fourth record on Merge, "Goths" was recorded at Blackbird Studio in Nashville with "no comped vocals, no pitch correction, and no guitars unless you count the bass guitar." The quartet is about to embark on a fall tour of Europe before returning to the states for an east-coast run that will include Mountain Stage.
Appropriately and coincidentally The Mountain Goats made their first appearance on Mountain Stage, in Huntington, WV, alongside the incomparable Nellie McKay, who will also join us December 3. McKay made her first of seven total appearances on Mountain Stage in 2004 and continues to be one of the more unpredictable, yet reliably creative artists you will encounter. No two performances have been the same, and the last time she played Marimba!
Renowned singer, songwriter, producer, and collaborator Joe Henry made his first appearance on Mountain Stage in 1991 and is due to release his 14th solo album "Thrum" on October 27. Just last year he appeared alongside Billy Bragg to perform songs from their album of classic folk tunes "Shine a Light." You can hear that episode here.

We're excited to welcome John K. Samson for the first time as part of our 34th celebration. Samson's highly anticipated latest, "Winter Wheat" was produced in garages and homes through a challenging winter in his native Winnipeg by Samson’s partner and collaborator, Christine Fellows, and his Weakerthans co-founder and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Jason Tait, and mixed in the spring in Toronto by Robbie Lackritz (Bahamas, Feist).
In conjunction with the record’s release, Samson has unveiled a video for the track Postdoc Blues, a moving and powerful song that follows an aging student struggling to maintain faith in the possibility of a better world.
