The president of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) says it needs to do a better job explaining the value of technical and vocational training to younger students.
Dr. Jay Box made the comment during a press conference in Morehead on Tuesday (March 31). It followed a public forum during which he listened to civic and business leaders offer their views on what they think the future focus of the system should be.
Box says some believe the KCTCS hasn’t made a clear connection between the training it provides and landing a good-paying job after graduation. He said they should do a better job to explain the link between the training it provides and the good-paying jobs available to its graduates.
“They were talking about, very much a change in perception about the value of career and technical education. Getting the message out to parents and children at an earlier age, to help them understand the pathway that is necessary for these students to move all the way through the community technical college and into the workforce.”
Dr. Box spoke at the Rowan Campus of the Maysville Community and Technical College as he continues his “listening tour” on campuses across Kentucky. It’s a prelude to developing a new, six-year plan for the system.
