Historic Mason County Cabin to be Moved

Terry Prather, The Ledger Independent

One of May’s Lick’s most notable citizens is about to be recognized nearly a century after his death through restoration of his log cabin and a possible military promotion.

Colonel Charles Young was the third African-American cadet to graduate from the United States Military Academy at West Point and be commissioned as an army officer.  He died serving in Nigeria in 1922. Mason County judge executive “Buddy” Gallenstein says Young lived a life devoted to military and diplomatic services, but because of his skin color, he never achieved a higher rank than colonel…

Gallenstein says helping with the efforts is the National Coalition of Black Veterans Organizations.  If successful, Young will be promoted to brigadier general and his cabin will be moved to another location and reconstructed for historic preservation.
