Expect new traffic patterns in next week or two with much of KY 519 now rebuilt between Clack Mountain and KY 801 in Rowan County, contractors expect to open parts of the new highway this month and move toward final completion of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet improvement project.
In the next week or two, traffic will be switched onto new pavement beginning near Clack Mountain. As work progresses, other sections of the KY 519 project will open between there and the KY 801 intersection.
The traffic switches are necessary so that contractors can complete parts of the new project adjacent to the old highway and so that old pavement and bridges can be removed.
At times, traffic could be on both new and old portions of the highway. Motorists should watch for changing traffic patterns, slow down and drive carefully, especially when moving between old and new pavement. In addition, lane restrictions and flagged traffic remain possible on both new and old roadways.
The reconstruction project, being done by The Walker Company of Kentucky, Inc., under a $10 million low-bid contract with the Transportation Cabinet, began in February 2016.
The project includes construction of a new KY 519 with wider travel lanes and shoulders, upgraded pavement and new bridges generally along and to either side of the existing highway between KY 801 near Cave Run Lake north two miles to the bottom of Clack Mountain where it ties in with a previous improvement project. Final project completion is expected by the end of the year.
Road construction schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions and other factors. Motorists are asked to heed all warning signs, slow-down in work zones and remain aware of workers and construction equipment when traveling.
