Art meets a lifelong love of education

BSCTC

Dr. Mina Majmundar and her husband moved to the U.S. from India in the early 1970’s. After Dr. Majmundar completed her medical residency in New York in 1978 the couple moved to eastern Kentucky.

Dr. Majmundar is now a retired anesthesiologist of more than 30 years and serves on the Big Sandy College Educational Foundation Board of Directors.

A long-time advocate of education, Dr. Majmundar enrolled in a 2-D art class at Big Sandy Community and Technical College (BSCTC) in Spring 2018.

The class, with professor Tim Smith, focuses on 2-D printing and explores the concepts of line, texture and composition.  The course also teaches the traditional Japanese process of woodblock printing, which involves drawing a design on a block of wood, cutting lines around the image and then using the block with ink to transfer the design onto a sheet of paper.  The print can be repeated multiple times to create different impressions.

Dr. Majmundar enjoyed the course and knew exactly what image she wanted to feature, that of Lord Ganesh.  Lord Ganesh is a deity in the Hindu religion and is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the deva of intellect and wisdom.

“Having her in class was a blast,“ Professor Tim Smith said.  “Mina is a very upbeat person and just a really nice and talented person to be around.”

After her artwork was featured in her first ever art show during the student art exhibition, Dr. Majmundar knew exactly what her next step would be.  She took her design of Lord Ganesh to Shirt Gallery and had t-shirts printed for her grandchildren.
