The Morehead State women's golf team has been picked No. 1 in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll for a third consecutive year. The Eagles closed out their fall campaign with an 88.7 winning percentage, finishing ahead of 47 opponents and behind just six.

MSU collected five first-place votes and 77 total points. Defending champion Murray State was picked second (73 points), while Eastern Kentucky (67), Jacksonville State (51) and Tennessee Tech (51) rounded out the top five positions. The Eagles last won the league tournament in 2011.

  Senior Karam Mashour registered a career-best 24 points, while senior Kareem Storey and junior Brent Arrington posted their first career double-doubles as Morehead State notched an 82-69 Ohio Valley Conference win over Austin Peay on Wednesday night (Jan. 28) at Aaron Arena.

The Eagles, who have won three consecutive games (all on the road), improve to 10-13 overall, 5-3 in league play and 6-7 on the road. The Governors fall to 7-14 overall, 2-6 in conference action and 5-3 at home. Morehead State also improves to 54-51 in the all-time series against Austin Peay.

The Morehead State women's basketball team was nearly flawless at the free throw line Monday night (Jan. 26) at Tennessee Tech, hitting 22-of-23, and that helped lead to a 64-54 victory over the Golden Eagles at the Eblen Center.

Morehead State, now 9-12 overall and 5-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference, connected on its first 22 free throws before finally misfiring with 53 seconds left. Tech fell to 5-17 overall and 2-7 in the league.

The Morehead State men's basketball team knocked down 9-of-12 from three-point range in the first half and led from start to finish in a 66-63 Ohio Valley Conference win over Jacksonville State on Saturday evening at Mathews Coliseum.

The Eagles improve to 9-13 overall, 4-3 in league play and 5-7 on the road, while the Gamecocks slip to 9-13 overall, 2-6 in conference action and 8-3 at home. Morehead State also improves to 20-8 in the all-time series with its fourth straight victory over Jacksonville State.

The Jan. 31 Eastern Kentucky at Morehead State men's basketball game will be televised live by This TV, which is WYMT's newly-launched secondary channel. The contest will also be simulcast on the CW Lexington, which is WKYT's secondary channel.

The Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Johnson Arena will feature the MSU and EKU women at 2 p.m. ET, with the men to follow around 4:30 p.m. The Saturday twillbill is being dubbed a "Gold Rush" as the first 250 fans at each game receive a free t-shirt, courtesy of St. Claire Regional Medical Center.

Morehead State's all-girl cheerleading squad claimed its second consecutive national championship Saturday at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College Nationals in Orlando, Fla.

The all-girl team edged out West Georgia to win its 10th UCA championship and 36th overall title for the Morehead State cheer program since 1988.

MSU's coed team finished as the national runner-up for the second straight year, narrowly coming in behind Delaware.

The Eastern Illinois men's basketball team knocked down nine consecutive field-goal attempts in the second half to escape with a 65-62 Ohio Valley Conference victory over Morehead State on Saturady afternoon (Jan. 17) at Johnson Arena.

The Panthers improve to 12-6 overall, 6-0 in conference play and 5-4 on the road. The Eagles slip to 7-13 overall, 2-3 in league action and 3-5 at home. Eastern Illinois also snaps a five-game skid in the series and moves to 23-13 all-time against Morehead State.

Senior guard Almesha Jones tied her season high with 26 points and handed out a game-best eight assists to lead the Morehead State women's basketball team to a 67-62 triumph over Eastern Illinois Saturday afternoon (Jan. 17) at Johnson Arena.

MSU moved to 7-11 overall and 3-2 in the Ohio Valley Conference with the program's second consecutive win over EIU. The series is now tied at 17 games apiece. The Panthers slipped to 7-12 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

The Morehead State men's basketball team jumped out to a 16-point advantage by making its first 12 field-goal attempts and never looked back in a 91-63 Ohio Valley Conference win over SIU Edwardsville on Thursday night (Jan. 15) at Johnson Arena.

The Eagles improve to 7-12 overall, 2-2 in league action and 3-4 at home. The Cougars, who had previously won six of their last seven, slip to 7-9 overall, 3-2 in OVC play and 0-7 on the road. MSU also moves to 6-1 in the series with its fourth straight win over SIUE.

The UT Martin men's basketball team tallied a 6-0 run late in the second half and made 4-of-6 from the field in overtime to post a 75-72 Ohio Valley Conference victory over Morehead State on Saturday evening at the Elam Center.

Both teams split their OVC weekends. The Skyhawks improve to 9-6 overall, 1-1 in league play and 4-2 at home. The Eagles slip to 6-12 overall, 1-2 in conference action and 3-7 on the road. UTM also snaps a nine-game skid in the series against MSU.

The UT Martin women's basketball team connected on 16 three-pointers Saturday night (Jan. 10) and set several season highs as the Skyhawks defeated Morehead State 99-70 at the Elam Center.

The Skyhawks, who also set a school record with 31 assists, won their third straight game and improved to 7-9 overall and 3-0 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Morehead State dropped its sixth straight in the UTM series and slipped to 6-10 overall and 2-1 in the league.

Seniors Karam Mashour and Billy Reader registered their first Division I double-doubles to power the Morehead State men's basketball team to a 70-57 victory at Southeast Missouri on Thursday night (Jan. 8) at the Show Me Center.

The Eagles improve to 6-11 overall, 1-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 3-6 on the road. The Redhawks slip to 7-9 overall, 1-2 in league action and 5-2 at home. MSU also improves to 26-17 in the all-time series with its third straight win over SEMO.

The Morehead State women's basketball team hit 82 percent from the free throw line and used a 10-0 second-half run to knock off Southeast Missouri 64-59 Thursday night (Jan. 8) at the Show Me Center.

The Eagles (6-9, 2-0 Ohio Valley Conference) won for the 10th consecutive time over SEMO (7-9, 0-3 OVC) and for the fifth straight time at the Show Me Center. The Redhawks still leads the all-time series 21-17. Morehead State is 2-0 in the league for the second straight season.

The Murray State men's basketball team knocked down 58 percent from the field in the second half en route to 51 percent for the night and posted a 66-57 Ohio Valley Conference victory over Morehead State on Saturday evening (Jan. 3) at Johnson Arena.

The Racers connected on 46 percent (11-of-24) from the floor in the first half. Murray State then drilled 11-of-19 after intermission on its way to 22-of-43 for the contest. The Racers have now knocked down at least 50 percent from the field in eight straight games (all wins).

Senior guard Almesha Jones nailed a three-pointer with two seconds remaining to propel the Morehead State women's basketball team to a 64-63 victory over Murray State in the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams Saturday (Jan. 3) at Johnson Arena.

Jones hit just the one trey all night, but it helped the Eagles improve to 5-9 overall and 1-0 in the OVC. Morehead State is now 8-2 in league openers in the last 10 seasons. The Racers fell to 5-9 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The East Tennessee State women's basketball team knocked down 14 three-pointers, hitting 54 percent from beyond the arc on Monday as the Buccaneers held off Morehead State 86-77 in an Education Day matinee at Johnson Arena.

ETSU, a Southern Conference member, won its fourth consecutive game and improved to 7-4. The Eagles slipped to 4-6 overall. ETSU now leads the overall series 6-4.

The visitors hit 14-of-26 from three-point range, 32-of-65 (49 percent) overall and led by as much as 76-60 in the middle of the second half.

The No. 12 Ohio State men's basketball team shot 57 percent from the floor and tallied a 21-3 advantage in second-chance points on its way to an 87-71 victory over Morehead State before a crowd of 14,578 on Saturday afternoon (December 13) at Value City Arena.

The Buckeyes, who compete in the Big Ten Conference, improve to 8-1 overall and 8-0 at home. The Eagles, who play in the Ohio Valley Conference, slip to 4-8 overall and 1-5 on the road. OSU has now won 11 straight at home, while MSU has dropped four in a row overall.

Brian Hutchinson, who is in his 10th full school year as the director of athletics at Morehead State, has been selected to serve on the NCAA Division I Council. The council oversees day-to-day operations for Division I. Its first meeting is set for January of 2015.

The 40-person council includes a variety of Division I athletic administrators, including conference commissioners and directors of athletics. Hutchinson is the lone representative of the Ohio Valley Conference and one of three individuals with ties to the Pioneer Football League.

The UAB men's basketball team held Morehead State to 34 percent from the field and used a 28-20 advantage in paint points to register a 58-48 non-conference victory on Thursday evening (Dec. 4) at Bartow Arena.

The Blazers, who snap a three-game skid, improve to 3-5 overall and 3-2 at home. The Eagles, who have dropped both contests this week, slip to 4-6 overall and 1-4 on the road. It was the first meeting between the two schools in men's hoops.

Morehead State football student-athletes Mike Jackson, Brandon Bornhauser and Joshua Brunner have been selected to play in the Football Championship Subdivision National Bowl.

The "all-star" game will be held Sunday (Dec. 7) in Miami at Florida International's Ocean Bank Field. Game time is set for 2 p.m.following the 10 a.m. contest featuring players from Divisions II, III and NAIA.

Senior guard Almesha Jones scored her 1,000th career point at Morehead State, but it came in a setback at Ohio Wednesday morning. The Bobcats defeated the Eagles 87-67 at the Convocation Center.

Jones, a Cincinnati native, hit a pair of free throws with 10:11 remaining to reach the 1,000-point plateau. She is the 22nd player in program to achieve that milestone. Jones led all players with 21, including 10-for-10 at the free throw line, and also added a game-best seven assists.

Eleven Morehead State student-athletes have been named to the 2014 All-Pioneer Football League Teams.

Justin Cornwall was named to the first-team as a return specialist. Brandon Bornhauser, Joshua Brunner, Ronald Cooper, Chris Fookes, Austin Gahafer, Justin Grier, Alex Hey, Mike Jackson, Luke Keller and Jake Raymond were tabbed honorable mention.

"I am proud of all our players who earned All-PFL honors," Head Coach Rob Tenyer said. "We had some outstanding individual performances this season."

Senior Jalen Riley and junior Lester Wilson combined for 39 points, while the East Tennessee State men's basketball team overcame a slow start to post a 63-59 non-conference win over Morehead State on Monday evening (Dec. 1) at Johnson Arena.

The Southern Conference Buccaneers improve to 4-1 overall and 2-1 on the road, while the Ohio Valley Conference Eagles slip to 4-5 overall and 2-1 at home. ETSU snaps a four-game skid in the all-time series, but MSU still holds a 28-25 head-to-head advantage.

Lipscomb's Ashley Southern hit a pair of free throws with 1.6 seconds remaining Saturday as the Morehead State women's basketball team dropped a 61-59 decision to the Bison at Johnson Arena.

Lipscomb improved to 2-4 overall and evened the series with MSU, 2-2. Morehead State, which nearly eliminated a nine-point deficit late in the second half, slipped to 3-3 overall and 1-1 at home.

The Morehead State men's basketball team has been picked second in the Ohio Valley Conference's East Division, while seniors Almesha Jones and Angelo Warner have earned Preseason All-OVC honors in a vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.

The Morehead State men are coming off a 20-win campaign for the fourth time in the past six years. The 2013-14 Eagles also earned a spot in the College Basketball Invitational, which marked the program's fourth postseason berth in six seasons and ninth in school history.

Morehead State senior Angelo Warner and junior Brent Arrington have been tabbed by College Sports Madness as Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference selections. Warner is a first-team honoree, while Arrington is a fourth-team choice.

Warner, a native of Orlando, is already 23rd on MSU's all-time scoring list with 1,133 points in 98 career games. He ranked sixth in the conference last season with a team-best 17.5 points per game and reached double figures in scoring on 31 occasions.

Former Morehead State star Kenneth Faried has signed a five-year contract extension with the National Basketball Association's Denver Nuggets. The deal is worth $60 million, according to Yahoo! Sports, ESPN and several other national media outlets.

Faried, a 6-foot-8 forward, most recently helped the United States capture a gold medal in the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) World Cup. The U.S.A., which won all nine of its contests, has now secured an automatic bid to the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Senior Jade Flory scored two goals, and senior midfielder Caity Fox recorded a pair of assists to lead the Morehead State soccer team to a 3-0 win over Tennessee Tech Sunday (Oct. 5) at Jayne Stadium.

Sophomore forward Angela Black capped the scoring with a goal with just five seconds left. Morehead State improved to 8-2-4 overall, 3-0-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference and 6-0-0 at home this year. MSU is now 9-1-2 against Tech since 2003. The Golden Eagles fell to 2-11-0 overall, 0-4-0 in the league and 1-9-0 in road matches.

The Morehead State women's golf team fired a 305 on Tuesday (Sept. 30) at the Silver Lakes Golf Course to finish second in the 11-team Chris Banister Classic. The Eagles were second after the opening round and held their spot throughout the 54-hole affair.

"The goal is to win every tournament, but that's not very realistic in our sport," Head Coach Stephanie Barker said. "I was pleased with the way we handled all three rounds on a very challenging course. We played solid, everyone contributed and we were in contention to win."

The Morehead State baseball program is holding an alumni weekend in conjunction with MSU's Homecoming Week. The events will take place Saturday and Sunday.

One of the highlights of the weekend will be recognition of the 1983 Ohio Valley Conference Championship team at the MSU football game versus Campbell, which kicks off at 1 p.m. That team, coached by the late Steve Hamilton, won the OVC North Division Title, overall OVC Title and advanced to an NCAA Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich., where the Eagles won two games.
